The Grace of Stain
November 22, 2017 @ 8:00 PM - December 3, 2017 @ 6:00 PM
‘The Grace of Stain’ features extraordinary works in rust, copper and wax on Kinwashi paper by St Kilda Artist, Kim Simon. Kim’s amazing works were discovered at a recent exhibition, and we did not hesitate to invite her to show these incredibly beautiful and involving original pieces in The Laneway Artspace.
‘There is nothing more raw or uncensored than the marks we leave on others, sometimes in a blink.
My art practice is primarily experimental. As I play within the exploration of process and materials, so too do I play with the context of their story.
The rust and copper stains left on these pieces don’t change the original composition or strength of the metals, the metals lose nothing in their embrace with the paper. The paper leaves the interaction stained with an impression, the source of the impressions often none the wiser.
Fundamental to my thinking, is wherever we go and in whatever we do, impressions are stained in our memory, on our skin and in the very core of our being. We are the givers and receivers of impressions, some unbeknownst to us, others of which we are fully aware.’
