MY ST KILDA ARTS TOURISM ACCOUNT
It’s become a thing. We’re not talking about the birth of Jesus and how we’ve ended up celebrating it each year. We’re talking about the annual Tripod Christmas show (though it’s not entirely unrelated).
We started doing these things in the deep, dark late 1990s. Why? Because, however you feel about Christmas, the music about and around it always makes you feel magical just when you need it: in the lead up to Christmas. (We also thought it might improve our chances of starring on Carols By Candlelight. The Ray Martin-hosted Melbourne one, not the trashfest that they do in Sydney.)
Now that we’ve puffed up your Melbourne/Christmas spirit, it’s time to double down and announce that this year, Tripod’s Christmas show will be visited upon both the North and South of the Yarra; at the twin jewels of Melbourne live music: Thornbury Theatre and Memo Music Hall in St Kilda.
And at each show, a different set of guests will pay musical homage. Memo Music Hall on Friday, December 1 will feature special guests: Missy Higgins, Elana Stone, Colin Lane Official Page, and Brian Nankervis. At the Thornbury Theatre on Saturday December 2 will be Casey Bennetto, Bob Franklin, Ladychoir, Randy, and Xani Kolac
And we’ll be smashing out our original Christmas-based tunes, including the one about spending christmas with your loved one’s loved ones, the one about whether Santa has a valid visa and the one about the reindeer who had no nose, answering the question: If Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson and Sting grew up in Melbourne’s south-east, what would Christmas sound like?
