Transition – removing the constraints of functionality

March 11, 2018 @ 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM

For the sixth exhibition in our Summer/Autumn 2018 Season – ‘Transition’ – removing the constraints of functionality – we are delighted to introduce creations by Sydney-based Artist, Len Joynson.

‘Viewing Len’s work immediately transported me to a distant time and place,’ said Geoffrey Williams, Founding Artistic Director of The Laneway Artspace. ‘It was as though I was viewing rare and precious pieces from an important archeological ‘dig’. These stunning pieces are obviously the work of a master craftsman, and it is an honour for us to present Len’s exceptional vessels as a highlight of our Summer/Autumn 2018 Season.’

In Len’s words …

‘I have long had a fascination with decorative arts and traditional vessels from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures, particularly ceramic and bronze forms. These vessels, while used functionally in daily life and for ceremonial purposes, were also decorative in nature in terms of their structure and often brightly coloured and heavily incised, so in addition to their essential functionality, they were also pieces of art.

My work takes a contemporary approach to these traditional forms, using them as the spark of inspiration, adding to and morphing forms with architectural elements. In doing so my primary goal is to create a form that, while being recognisable as a vessel, is contemporary, aesthetic and that changes from different view points around the pot. Function is implied, but not practical.

In addition to form, a key element of my work is creating surface texture using matte glazes – texture that is inherent within the creation of the form and through the use multiple layers of slips, washes and glazes to create depth of surface and colour that changes over the surface of the pot.

Until recently, I had been a part-time artist and full-time executive working in communications, policy and strategy development across agriculture, technology and aviation industries, before taking the decision some eighteen months ago to pursue my passion for ceramics full time. I currently work out of the Kil.n.it Studios in Glebe, NSW, and from my home in Leichhardt.’
