Marcela was selected as finalist at the Noel Counihan Commemorative Art Award 2017 and the Graeme Hildebrand Art Award 2017. She is currently studying the first semester of the Master of Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in the University of Melbourne.
In Marcela’s words …
‘As our society is dependant on fossil fuels, my investigations are focused on the exploration of human activity and the impact upon the marine environment. The levels of pollution, both constant and unmeasured release toxic and acoustic residues impacting marine life. Whale species in particular were brought to the brink of extinction and are only now recovering their numbers. They continue to be heavily impacted by high-frequency mapping sonar systems for oil exploration among other unjustified reasons.
It is imperative to express discomfort to the search for unsustainable fossil fuels, otherwise whales will be continue to be targeted and endangered.’
