Detraction: An exhibition by Tamsin Green

June 28, 2017 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

The Alliance Française is delighted to announce it’s next exhibition: DETRACTION, by Tamsin Green.

28 June – 28 July

We invite you to join us for the official exhibition opening on Wednesday the 28th of June at 6:30pm, and to a talk with the artist on Saturday the 1st of July at 4pm.

Tamsin Green’s work is based on the place of the feminine in the history of art and theory: where women are often the under-acknowledged material support for artistic and literary products. Tamsin’s previous exhibition at the Alliance Française ‘Theft: Prints and Drawings’ attempted to represent the literary work of a woman whose writing was never able to be published until it was stolen and appropriated by a man. In this exhibition, Tamsin once more attempts to reclaim and rectify the representation of a woman who this time, is depicted in a famous 20th century work of art.

‘Detraction’ is a feminist response to Marcel Duchamp’s artwork entitled ‘Large Glass’ or alternatively known as ‘The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors’. Duchamp’s large vertical freestanding glass construction, which he finished in 1923, abstractly depicts the erotic encounter between a “Bride,” and her ten “Bachelors”. Tamsin Green’s ‘Detraction’ transforms this work horizontally, materially and ideologically. Where Duchamp depicts a bride, Tamsin depicts Antigone, a figure of feminist defiance in Greek mythology, as a way of reclaiming the woman as simply an allegory of desire. The result is a three metre wide ink on silk print that will be suspended from the Eildon Gallery, along with a number of other complementary works.
