Thursday nights – soul with Thando

December 14, 2017 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Amy Winehouse has described her musical evolution as moving from jazz, to soul, through to gospel, then motown and finally hip-hop. As part of the exhibition, we present a series of evenings that traverse Amy’s vast musical journey, digging a little deeper into the styles of music that informed her complex writing, composition, melody and voice.

Zimbabwean born and Melbourne based soul and R&B songstress Thando will bring her improvisation nights all the way from Coburg’s The Penny Black Southside with a rotating line-up of some of Melbourne’s best musicians. Having supported Maxwell, REMI and Sampa the Great, Thando will warm up the stage with 100% improvised soul with some classic hits thrown in along the way for good measure, before opening it up to singers and musicians who want to jump up and have a jam. Special feature vocalists includes Rita Satch – think of pop melodies with dark, soulful beats and a jazz inspired husky jazz vocal. Widely known for her seductive live performances, Rita Satch is fast becoming an unforgettable presence in Australia’s neosoul movement. In 2015 Rita played her first UK/European tour including at UK’s iconic Glastonbury festival.

BYO instruments or just come along and enjoy the show before heading up into the Museum’s ‘Amy Winehouse:A Family Portrait’ exhibition.

The Thursday night series is brought to you by Jewish Museum of Australia and Hear Them Holler.
