Thursday nights – Hip Hop with DJ MzRizk

March 8, 2018 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Amy Winehouse has described her musical evolution as moving from jazz, to soul, through to gospel, then motown and finally hip-hop. As part of the Jewish Museum’s ‘Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait’ exhibition, we present a series of evenings that traverse Amy’s vast musical journey, digging a little deeper into the styles of music that informed her complex writing, composition, melody and voice.

Amy’s first foray into hip-hop was as a teenager when she was inspired by her love of Salt-N-Pepa – with her friend, Juliette, they formed their own rap group called ‘Sweet’n’Sour’ (Amy was Sour). Later, embarking on a love affair with R&B and hip-hop, Winehouse shifted her love of hip-hop music into the worlds of Missy Elliot, Nas, Faith Evans, Brandy and Monica. Melbourne based DJ, curator and radio presenter, DJ MzRizk will curate a night of hip-hop tunes by some of Amy’s favourites, as well as some of the fresh hip-hop coming out of the local music scene. MzRizk has supported some of the biggest hip-hop artists in the world including Mos Def, Public Enemy, Jill Scott, The Daptones, Jurassic 5, Talib Kweli and DJ Maseo (De La Soul). Head down to the Museum from 6pm to fill your head with some quality hip-hop before heading into the exhibition.

Thursday Nights are brought to you by Jewish Museum of Australia and Hear Them Holler.
